The Media Shouldn’t Be Blamed For The Financial Crisis

With retirement accounts shrinking across the country, everyone is trying to determine who is to blame for the financial crisis. After all, if we can place blame on somebody we can then burn them at the stake, and it will make us feel so much better, right? Recently the New York Times published a controversial piece that basically blamed the entire financial crisis on President Bush. Several publications have disputed this piece, including Newsbusters, and of course the White House. Surely President Bush had a hand in the economic carnage of 2008, but to say that he was solely responsible for it is pretty ridiculous. There are so many people that have a hand in economic matters of this country, and while the President is the figurehead, he most certainly is not the only one to whom blame is due. So what other names are being thrown out? Greenspan, Bernanke and Paulson are all likely candidates, but according to a recent survey by Opinion Research most Americans think a large portion of the blame falls on the media.

According to the poll 77 percent of Americans believe the media is to blame for stoking the financial crisis by spreading fear among consumers. My first reaction to this was a big, WOW. Yes, the media has spread a bit of fear and panic, and the stories of doom and gloom are certainly helping to sell more papers, but there is another reason why all you see are negative stories: Positive news is next to impossible to come by if you don’t just make it up. If the media had more positive news to cover, you can bet that they would do it.

Americans who wish to bury their heads in the sand can feel free to do so, but personally I want to know what is going on in the financial world and I want the truth, not some lame story meant to make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. People hoarding their money out of fear fostered by what they have heard from the media may be making matters worse, but it is hard to blame reporters for doing their jobs and reporting the truth. It is falsifying information or misleading readers in some other way that we should scorn. Yet things are getting so bad that in the press release issued by Opinion Research, national expert on corporate liability and white collar crime issues Richard L. Scheff warns that members of the media could potentially be exposed to liability despite apparent constitutional protections.

Opposition leader wins Ghana poll

This is of course absolutely ridiculous. What we are saying is that instead of the hard truth we want our media to report sugar-coated stories to make us feel good about the economy. If you want a bubble, that is one great formula right there: Get the public to buy into a bunch of hype so they can feel confident buying up overpriced assets, ignoring that the bubble will inevitably pop, bankrupting those who believed that everything was coming up roses when the market was really pushing up daisies. The media should be sued were they to feed false hope in this economic environment, but certainly not for reporting the truth. That defeats their entire purpose for existing. For the Americans who can’t handle this hard truth: Good luck to you, as you most certainly are going to need it.

Former AD Erker hired to replace Villa

Former athletic director Jim Erker, who retired in 2006, has accepted the job again in the wake of the resignation and subsequent arrest of AD and football coach Daniel Villa on rape charges.

Erker, who worked as AD and taught history until his retirement, was called by Walpole School Superintendent Lincoln Lynch on Tuesday to talk about finishing the rest of the school year as interim AD.

When Lynch offered the job to Erker, he readily accepted.

“It was a godsend to be able to call up Jim Erker and have him step in,” Lynch said today. “He started last Tuesday, the afternoon of the day that Danny resigned.”

Villa is in custody in his home state of Arizona after turning himself in to answer an arrest warrant. He is charged with three counts of rape of a child over 14 and three counts of enticing a minor, Walpole Police said. Authorities said it could be several days before a rendition hearing is held fantasy movies in Arizona and Villa is returned to Massachusetts to face the charges.

Lynch said he called for a meeting with Villa after receiving a complaint a week ago Monday from a parent. Lynch said he asked Villa to take a leave of absence with pay, pending further investigation by his office into the allegations.

Villa left the office and, according to Lynch, within an hour informed him that he would be resigning his position immediately as athletic director, head football coach of the 2008 Division 2 Super Bowl championship adventure movies football team and teacher.

Big baby

Erker, who could not be reached for comment today, is expected to fill the position until the end of the school year. Lynch said he hopes to be advertising the AD’s position at that point for a permanent replacement.

Erker, who started in the Walpole school system in 1971, became the high school athletic director in 1998.

Check back here and in this week’s Walpole Times for more details.

with about eight minutes sinistral in the anything else half sunday tenebriousness, ed davis yawned as rutgers inclined to shoot a free throw.

but the north carolina freshman wasn’t bored or around to fall asleep. moments later he delivered a crowd-pleasing block that started an 11-0 fail by the tar heels, who went on to secure a 97-75 triumph.

it was the undefeated, no. 1 ranked tar heels 12th no-nonsense duplicated-digit win in the 12-0 season.

tyler hansbrough got it all started on the first win, when he picked in error a knights’ pass, then converted a three-point play on the offensive end. he did it typical tyler fashion, getting banged on the arm as he put in the basket.

the all-america knocked in his pre-eminent four shots and continued toward a 26-quality, 10-rebound night. division ty lawson added 19 points and danny callow dazzled with 18 points.

rutgers, led by mike rosario’s 23 points, provided more game than some had envisioned.

they shot 51.7 percent in the first half and trailed 35-30 with 7:32 remaining. that’s when the tar heels – shooting 52.7 percent in the opening space – expanded their lead.

they fail to attend the tar heels lead to 13 with a little under six minutes remaining. but then hansbrough and unseasoned combined object of nine quick points.

the partisan smith center crowd also got its before look this period at marcus ginyard, who has been sidelined with a breach in his left foot. he rebounded an air ball, had a deflection on defense, and didn’t permit rutgers’ sharp shooter mike rosario (10 first half points) to incise.

in the second period, ginyard adage brief action again, made a steal and fed the flying lawson repayment for a solid-break layup.

ginyard also got two laid-back throw attempts, made his first, then – looking winded – air-balled the alternative.

while the tar heels have plenty of firepower, they can use the senior’s defense, influence and versatility.
Related posts: How i met your mother episode guide, James young, Bourne movies, Green acres theme song, Stevens point journal

when i catch-phrase this headline on wired’s book of complete technology breakthroughs, i got beside oneself because i touch maybe some scientists had found a way to record baked lays potato chips palatable. that didn’t conclude at fault, but this is rather great, too:

Grandma’s pillbox with the days of the week neatly marked is set to go high tech. Tiny edible chips will replace the organizer, tracking when patients take their pills (or don’t) and monitoring the effects of the drugs they’re taking. Proteus, a Redwood City, California, company, has created tiny chips out of silicon grains that, once swallowed, activate in the stomach. The chips send a signal to an external patch that monitors vital parameters such as heart rate, temperature, state of wakefulness or body angle.

The data is then sent to an online repository or a cellphone for the physician and the patient to track. Proteus says its chips can keep score of how patients are responding to the medication. That may be just the beginning, as the chips could improve drug delivery and even insert other kinds of health monitors inside the body….

The chips are still in clinical trials, but this could be a very powerful tool in personalizing medicine. Plus, giving patients online access to all their own data—paired with efforts like Google Health, which makes it easier to create and maintain portable records as well—means it will be easier for patients to leave bad doctors and try a different doc.
